Jones Triumphs Over Bayless At Big Ticket Classic
by Jason McGee
November 25, 2006

Verdell Jones III showed why he has been the MSH 2008 #1 ranked player in the state for the better part of the last year in a highly touted matchup against the MSH #6 ranked player in all of the nation, Jerryd Bayless. The match was possibly the most highly anticipated matchup of the Big Ticket Classic and didn't disappoint.

The game was even from the start with Jones getting a couple of early lay-ups as well as Bayless throwing down a couple of monster dunks. Donald Stewart and Jordan Walker of Champaign Central also made their presence felt early. Bayless began to heat up towards the end of the second quarter as he began to rain jumpshots. He really likes to find his range in the middle of the court and once he elevates there is not a whole lot that can be done to stop him. He has a great plant and fire shot that allows himself to stay in balance no matter where he jumps.

In the second half a duel of sorts began. Although never really guarding each other both players began to face off in the sense that they were competing to keep their teams in the game. Bayless put the pressure on Jones by continuing his hot hand. Jones didn't back down at all and came right back with scoring opportunities of his own. The two actually exchanged baskets on about 4-5 consecutive possessions. Jones showed that he would not be intimidated in this pressure filled atmosphere that pitted him against such a high caliber player. He also nailed some key free throws down the stretch.

In the end Jones and Champaign Central prevailed 86-83. Jones finished with 28 points on 11-19 shooting, 8 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. Donald Stewart also played big with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jordan Walker also chipped in 11 points. Bayless was dominant throughout finishing with 30 points on 12-24 shooting. His team just didn't have enough on this night.
