Freshman Forecast Part I by Pat Benninger February 11, 2007
This past November, many of the top talents
throughout the state of Illinois signed letters of intent to attend collegiate level schools and participate in
their basketball programs. The following
is a list of the players from the Early Signing Period that we feel will have
the most successful freshman seasons. Prep school players are not included.
Name |
Hgt
|
Position
|
Destination |
Larry Dumas |
6'3"
|
Guard/Forward
|
Western Illinois |
When you work as hard as Dumas, a lot of things
will go your way. Because he’s a
tweener, small forward in a shooting guard's body, he was forced to settle at a
lower mid major school, but he should have a good impact on their program. He should see minutes at the 2, 3, and
possibly the 4 position, depending on matchups.
|
Brandon Dunson |
6'2"
|
Shooting Guard
|
Tennessee-Chattanooga |
Brandon will strengthen the Mocs backcourt on both ends of the floor. His scoring ability will help him see
immediate playing time as their top scorer graduates after this season. Because of his skillset, IQ, and athleticism,
he will be able to play the 1, 2, and 3.
He’s going to a program that needs exactly what he has. |
Mustapha Farrakhan |
6'4"
|
Shooting Guard
|
Virginia |
Farrakhan’s touch from beyond the arch will be
needed next season as the Cavaliers will lose All-American point guard and team
scoring leader, Sean Singletary. He will
join a solid recruiting class but his abilities will be more significant right
away more than others’.
|
Aaron Johnson |
5'8"
|
Point Guard
|
Alabama-Birmingham |
Remember Squeaky Johnson. Though there is a new coach since he departed
the program, his services could have certainly been used this season. Aaron Johnson will be a great addition to
Mike Davis’ club as they are missing a lead guard to make plays and control
the tempo of the game, as the Blazers get somewhat out of control in their
“run-n-gun” system. Should be a four
year starter.
|
Demetri McCamey |
6'3"
|
Guard
|
Illinois |
Though most compare D-Mac to Deron Williams and
they do have physically similarities, however, skillwise, it is a bit unjust. McCamey will be a good player under Bruce
Weber as he is one that doesn’t standout offensively but is able to do multiple
things on that end of the floor. He is
also a very good defender, which plays into Weber’s program well. He will play some 1, 2, and 3 for the
Fighting Illini.
|
Dwight McCombs |
6'7"
|
Power Forward
|
Miami-Ohio |
Will be a very solid post player in the MAC
conference. Most teams in their league
are known for having power players inside.
McCombs will have the body to bang and has good skills around the
basket. He will be one of the bigger
bodies on their roster next season so he should see immediate playing time.
|
Jacob Pullen |
6'0"
|
Guard
|
Kansas State |
Jacob has a chance to be a great player at Kansas State. Currently, the Wildcats are without a
distributing point guard. Current point,
Clent Stewart is more of a two-guard running the point. Pullen has the ability to push the ball up
the floor and can create well for his teammates, as he is a very underrated
passer due to his scoring abilities. He will enter the Big XII alongside one of the greatest classes in K-State's history.
|
Derrick Rose |
6'3"
|
Point Guard
|
Memphis |
The perfect addition to a very athletic Memphis program. Rose is a great compliment to the wings and
forwards that John Calpari’s team is currently comprised of. As Coach C already stated, if Rose was on
their team this season, they could possibly be a top five team in the NCAA. After one year, don’t be surprised if Pooh is
a top 5 draft pick. |
