Player Focus: Anthony Ahlers
MidStateHoops.com was the first to rank Lucas O'Rear, the first to alert the state to the talents of Eric Hobbie in the summer of 2005, and now we bring to you the next big thing. State of Illinois: Meet Anthony Ahlers. Ahlers is an intriguing post hailing from Putnam County who currently boasts the state's top class of 2007 post in Carlton Fay. He stands 6-6 and weighs 205 pounds. he is only a freshman and believes he will grow to up to 6-8. Ahlers is a player in the mold of Fay but continues to diversify his game. Ahlers is a post player first who earned his way onto the varsity roster after the Christmas tournaments were over. He worked his way up to the 6th man by the time the playoffs rolled around. he is a strong defensive presence and rebounder who helps take the pressure off Fay by allowing him to concentrate on his offensive game. He continues to develop his own offensive repertoire which includes working on an outside jumper. Colleges coaches who have seen Ahlers workout due to being around to observe Fay have stated that he is better developed skill-wise at this point than Fay was. That is high praise for Ahlers and we believe that he very well may end up being a better prospect than Fay. He is able to learn from Fay and told MSH that he sees himself following Fay's leadership and sportsmanship on the court. Ahlers is expected to take on a large roll next season and is in position to have a monster season just as Fay burst onto the scene his Sophomore season. Putnam County is sure to have one of the top teams this upcoming season as their State Championship hopes were derailed this past season when they lost to eventual state champs Seneca. At this point Ahlers is not playing for any AAU team. If there are any teams interested just e-mail us and we will give you Ahlers contact information as his information is in the Player Database.
